Vinyl Decals or Magnets for US DOT Compliance?
We often receive the question, “Should we use vinyl decals or should we use magnets for our US DOT regulation lettering?”
There are benefits to displaying your US DOT compliance numbers on vinyl decals & magnets depending on the type of work you are doing. Let’s say you are a part time to full time trucker and drive a minimum of 500 miles a month, that’s pretty much everyone right? If this is you, we highly recommend decals because they last a lot longer, withstand weather elements and highway speed driving a million times better than traditional door magnets.
We had a customer reach out to us about a stressful situation she encountered on the open road. She had purchased truck magnets and was hauling product across Northern California. Everything was fine and dandy until she reached a scale checkpoint where the inspection officer and the California Highway Patrol asked her, why aren’t you displaying any regulation numbers? She then answered, yes, I’m up to code, the information is on the magnets on the side of the cabin. No magnets were to be found. She was hit with a fine of $35,000 for not properly displaying her regulation numbers. What had happened was that her magnets fell off sometime during transit, it’s possible rain or the low temperatures caused the magnets to lose their effectiveness and fell off at highway speeds.
Another downside to magnets is that they can be stolen very easily. We’ve have had hundreds of customers complaining how their magnets were stolen. The only benefit we see in displaying your regulation numbers on a magnet is if you use your work vehicle as a personal vehicle and don’t do much driving.
All of our decals come with a 10-year warranty and are proven to withstand all of the elements. Take a look at our collections, combine your US DOT number with a company name & be visually aesthetic.
