California Highway Regulations
Operating in California?
Chances are you’re required to have a CA number. See page (What is a CA number) for more details.
CA numbers are issued by California Highway Patrol. The application process takes about 2 weeks & most CHP offices will not give you the CA number over the phone; you will receive a form letter in the mail.
Unfortunately, you may also need an MCP depending on the type of operation & having a CA number is mandatory before submitting the application to DMV. Instead of calling in and trying to get a CA over the phone, you can now search for it online!
How to search for your CA number online:
Visit CHP.CA.GOV
In the search bar, enter Carrier Inspection Results & select the second result.
Once you’ve made your way to the carrier inspection results page, you can select Type of regulation number; I recommend using a USDOT number.
Enter your DOT number and if your CA number has been processed, your name/ company name & CA number will come up as a search result.
You’re now ready to process an application for an MCP through the DMV.
Don’t forget to buy your decals!
Your CA number will be your identification in California & reference your Motor Carrier Permit/ your authority to operate in California. Without this important regulation number you may be subject to fines & may even be towed!
Be responsible and stay on top of your paperwork! The citizens of USA thank you.
