Displaying your USDOT number correctly outside of your motor vehicle is one of the most important things you need to do as a trucker. You might not give it much thought but it’s extremely important.

In the state of Florida, weigh stations read your USDOT number using advanced number recognition cameras and pull up all of your information in seconds! If your USDOT number is not displayed correctly it will show up as a NO READ and the chances of you getting pulled over or inspected are high! This happens when your US DOT number is too small or it blends in with the color of your commercial vehicle.

As a refresher,

Your USDOT number and other lettering must be at least 2 inches in height, it must contrast with the color of the vehicle and it must be visible from at least 50 feet away.

Are you US DOT & FMCSA Compliant?

Below is a perfect example of a compliant USDOT sign for interstate commerce. This young man is displaying his trucking name (authority) along with his USDOT, MC & GVW regulation numbers. In all 50 states, you must display your business name along with your USDOT number on your power unit on both sides in an easy to read font which must be visible from at least 50 feet away.

1. Be USDOT Compliant.

 You want to make sure that you are USDOT, FMCSA & State compliant. You want to have that confidence going through weigh stations or when you get stopped by DOT that all of your lettering is compliant.

2. Aesthetics! Show Your Professionalism!

We often see vehicles displaying their USDOT & important regulation numbers with a piece of paper, a piece of tape with a sharpie written on or those ugly precut number stickers! First impressions matter! Take your business seriously! When was the last time you got on an airplane that had no graphics or paint job? You have to remember, when you show up to deliver or pick up a load the first thing business partners see is your decal lettering. I can’t stress this enough!

3. Safe Time During Your Trucking Career!

When you get pulled over by DOT for an inspection, the first thing DOT officers look at is your regulation numbers. Are they visible!? Are they compliant? Are you missing numbers on the outside of your cabin? You want to make sure you display all of your required regulation numbers professionally and neatly outside of your truck to save time and be compliant. This same goes for when you go through truck scales/weight stations. Just thing all of the time you will save throughout the course of your trucking career.

4. Be Secure!

If you are using professional vinyl decals, they are not going anywhere unless you try to remove them. DOT numbers placed on magnets tend to fall off or get stole pretty often. If you choose to display your numbers on a piece of paper, the elements or high speed could destroy your sign. If you are serious about trucking, you will get professional high-quality decals.
